Testosterone Replacement Therapy

Testosterone is a major sex hormone produced in the testes of men. The pituitary gland is responsible for controlling the production of testosterone hormone. In the testes, luteinizing hormone binds to receptors on Leydig cells; this stimulates production and secretion of testosterone. Testosterone helps to develop the primary and secondary sexual characteristics in males. Development of sex organs, deeper voice, muscle mass, and facial hair all result from the sufficient production of this hormone. Testosterone deficiency as happens with age needs effective testosterone treatment.

Testosterone - The Sex Hormone

Along with the development of sexual features, testosterone hormone also controls the following actions in a body:

  • Increases Libido in both men and women
  • Increase muscle mass and bone density
  • Increases the metabolic rate decreasing body fat (adipose fatty tissue)
  • Increases energy, drive ambition, sense of well-being and mood

Testosterone Deficiency:

With age, testosterone production declines, thus disturbing overall body functioning. Low levels of testosterone hormone lead to a condition termed as hypogonadism that can be treated with testosterone replacement therapy. Hypogonadism can be divided into two categories depending on the occurrence of pathology.

Primary Hypogonadism: It occurs at testicular level with high release of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and low release of testosterone.

Secondary Hypogonadism: It occurs at pituitary hypothalamic level with low or in some cases normal release of luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone along with low levels of testosterone hormone.

Testosterone replacement therapy effectively works to improve upon the conditions of primary and secondary hypogonadism.

Factors Causing Low Testosterone Levels

Along with aging, there are some other factors that contribute toward low testosterone production and make a man go for testosterone treatment.

• ED - Erectile Dysfunction
• Loss of libido or sexual desire
• Loss of energy and extreme fatigue
• Testicular malfunction or injury
• Malfunctioning of pituitary gland
• Genetic disorders (Klinefelter’s Syndrome)

Signs Of Testosterone Deficiency:

Deficient testosterone hormone levels can lead to many undesirable symptoms, like low libido, loss of energy, feeling tired all the time, lack of vitality, erectile dysfunction, loss of morning erections or soft erections, declining muscle mass and loss of muscle tone, loss of bone density or osteoporosis, loss of body hair, depression, mood swings or extreme irritability, inability to sleep or insomnia, lower blood hemoglobin, memory loss, loss concentration, anemia, high cholesterol, decrease in cognitive function, lack of drive and ambition, loss of enthusiasm for life. Testosterone therapy is the only possible way to cope with testosterone deficiency.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy

Before start of testosterone treatments, a comprehensive medical exam and blood test will determine the extent of hormone deficiency. Expert testosterone doctors can prescribe testosterone therapy for low testosterone blood serum levels and will suggest a variety of testosterone administration options for replacement therapy.

Best Available Options For Testosterone Replacement Therapy

Hormone Therapy options to treat  male hormone deficiency, hypogonadism (andropause - the male menopause).

• Testosterone Injections (every 2 or 3 weeks)
• Testosterone Pellets (implant up to 6 months)
• Testosterone Patches (applied on daily basis)
• Testosterone Gels / Creams (applied on daily basis)
• Testosterone Buccal (applied to gumline)
• Muco-adhesive material ( as prescribed by doctor)

Choosing one best option for testosterone therapy requires consultation with your hormone doctor or age management physician. Age management physicians and doctors can provide expert guidance to the patients seeking testosterone replacement therapy..
