WHAT CAN BOTOX DO FOR YOU?
Whenever you laugh, frown, concentrate or squint into the sun, your facial muscles contract and your skin creases. As you get older your skin loses its elasticity and those creases deepen into lines that become permanently etched on your face. Frown lines between your eyes can become particularly noticeable at a relatively young age, making you look angry or worried even when you’re not.
By temporarily immobilising the muscles you use to frown, Botox can smooth out those lines, restoring a more youthful, less stressed expression to your face.
WHAT IS BOTULINUM TOXIN A?
Botulinum Toxin A (Botox) is a natural protein derived from the Bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. The protein was initially used for the treatment of motor disorders and various kinds of involuntary muscular spasms, including cerebral palsy and eye squints. When used cosmetically, it reversibly blocks the nerve impulses responsible for contraction of tiny facial muscles that are related to expression lines.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
By relaxing the muscles that cause frown lines, forehead lines and crows feet:
· The skin appears dramatically smoother
· Facial lines disappear or diminish dramatically in just a few days
· The creation of more wrinkles is prevented
Normal activities can be resumed immediately
· It only takes 2-3 days for the injections to begin to take effect and 7 day for full effect
· Treatment lasts 3-6 months
WHERE CAN BOTOX BE USED?
· Frown lines on the forehead & between the brows
· Crow’s feet around the eyes
· Bunny lines on the nose
· Lip area and corners of the mouth usually in conjunction with Dermal Fillers
· Necklines- horizontal ‘necklace lines’ and vertical ‘platysmal bands’ can be softened.
WHAT IS THE TREATMENT LIKE?
Tiny micro-needles are used so discomfort is minimal. The treatment takes around 15 minutes and normal activities can be resumed immediately after the treatment. It begins to take effect over the next 2-3 days.
HOW LONG DO THE EFFECTS LAST?
For most, the results last 3-6 months, however individuals vary. Facial muscles that are larger (such as in men) or which are used by facially ‘expressive’ clients may require more frequent treatments. After several treatments the effects may last longer.
WILL IT LEAVE ME EXPRESSIONLESS?
No, definitely not. Advanced training enables us to minimize any possible loss of facial expression by accurate dosing and injecting specific facial muscles responsible for the wrinkles. Botox is intended to produce a more youthful and rested appearance.
WHO IS SUITABLE FOR BOTOX?
Starting in our late twenties, facial lines and wrinkles begin to appear that affect not just your appearance, but also your self-esteem and even your choice of career. By smoothing out those lines Botox can help you restore a more youthful, less stressed expression to your face. Many people can benefit from Botox - not just celebrities, and it can work as well for men as it does for women. In fact many men are already experiencing the benefits of a younger, more relaxed looking appearance that Botox can provide.
WHO IS NOT SUITABLE FOR BOTOX?
Anyone who is pregnant, breast feeding or suffering from severe neuromuscular disorders, Bell’s palsy or blood coagulation disorders are not suitable for treatment.
WILL IT INTERACT WITH MEDICATION THAT I AM TAKING?
Drug interactions can occur when Botulinum toxin is used concomitantly with other medications. You must ensure that your doctor is aware of any medications you are taking, especially aminoglycoside antibiotics (gentamicin, neomycin), aspirin, anti-inflammatories, Gingko Biloba and
St John’s Wort.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
Over the past 15 years, large amounts of clinical and practical evidence have been generated in support of the effectiveness and safety of Botulinum Toxin in all its uses. Botox is approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) for cosmetic eradication for wrinkles on the face and for the treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive perspiration).
However, side effects can occur but are rare and always temporary. The most significant complication is a temporary drooping of the eyelid (<1% risk) or eyebrow, which resolves after 1-2 weeks. This is a result of local spread of the toxin at the injection site and can be minimised by accurate dosing.
PREPARING FOR THE TREATMENT
During your consultation with the doctor a full medical history will be taken to assess your suitability, and the benefits and potential side effects will be discussed in full.
AFTER THE TREATMENT
· Please refrain from touching the treated area for 3-4 hours
· Remain in an upright position for 3-4 hours
· You will be asked to use the injected muscles (i.e. frown, raise the eyebrows and smile) as much as possible for up to an hour after the treatment.
· Do not have facial massages or electrical stimulation to the face for 3 weeks
· Do not fly for 48 hours after the treatment.
Botox is a prescription drug and it is unlawful for anyone other than a qualified doctor to administer it. Experienced, aesthetically trained doctors provide the highest quality treatments.
