How Low Testosterone Effects Sleep

Testosterone is essential to getting a good night’s sleep. Healthy sleep habits play a very important role in keeping a person healthy both externally and internally, and able to perform everyday activities to the best of their abilities. Althogh sleep apnea (sleep disturbance) can be caused by physiological irregularities and obesity, low testosterone hormone levels can also contribute to sleep apnea. Testosterone-related sleep disorder is common in men. Lack of sleep also affects the mind, skin, level of testosterone and sexual health, blood vessels, proper mental and heart function. Disturbed testosterone levels and hormonal imbalances are major contributors of sleep apnea.

Testosterone Related Sleep Apnea Effects Other Functions

Individuals suffering from sleep apnea also experience a decline in libido or sex drive. Clinical sleep studies have demonstrated that sleep apnea patients have a low levels of the male hormone as compared to people who get good sleep. Erectile dysfunction, impotence, lowered sex drive and other sex related problems are common in men with sleep apnea.

Low Testosterone during Sleep

In some men, low testosterone levels occurs during their sleep which then returns to the normal range during daytime. To determine this kind of testosterone deficiency, different blood samples are taken during sleep times and compared making this the most effective way to test for this particular case of testosterone deficiency.

Connection between Sleep Apnea and Lowered Testosterone

In men experiencing sleep apnea, who cannot get a good night’s sleep, testosterone levels are subsequently low. It is during sleep that the testosterone hormone is released and consequently low production is the result. As sleep patterns are disturbed, men may experience less or loss of morning erection which are the result of losing the normally heightened levels of testosterone that is produced during a good night's sleep.

Patients with low testosterone who receive therapy for sleep apnea, experience a rise in their testosterone hormone levels. When sleep apnea is eliminated, testosterone release reaches a normal level.

Properly balanced testosterone hormone is a therapy to explore to address sleep apnea.
